Continue reading to learn how to choose a dental assistant program that will equip you with the necessary tools to thrive in the industry.
Know Your State’s Requirements
Looking into your state’s dental assisting requirements is the first step in choosing a program that will help you reach your career goals. Requirements vary between states, so understanding which programs are recognized in your state will help you start your search. Be sure to enroll in a school that will afford you the credentials to work in your desired location.
In some states, entry-level dental assisting jobs require no formal certification or training. In Utah, to legally operate dental x-ray equipment and perform dental radiographic procedures, a dental assistant must:
- Complete a dental assisting course from a CODA-Accredited program, OR
- Pass the national DANB Radiation Health and Safety exam, OR
- Complete a radiology course and exam approved by the Utah Dentist and Dental Hygienist Licensing Board that meet the criteria established by rule of the Board.
In addition, all dental assistants in Utah must be CPR certified.
Review the Different Types of Programs
There are a few different types of dental assisting programs, so it’s important to find the one that will help you accomplish your specific goals.
Here are a few common programs that you might find in your state:
- Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA)
- DANB-accepted dental assisting programs for NELDA certification
- State-Approved dental assisting programs
Meet the School’s Faculty and Tour the Facility
You wouldn’t buy a new car that you’ve never driven before, so why would you apply to a school without checking it out first too? Taking the time to tour the school and meet teachers will help you get a feel for how you’ll fit in there. Choose a program that employs friendly, knowledgeable teachers who care about you and your success.
Prioritize Job Placement Support
When searching for a dental assistant program, another factor that you should prioritize is the school’s job placement rate. Look for a school that offers job placement tools and resources. Also, look for programs that offer comprehensive, hands-on training.
Read Testimonials from Graduates
Speaking with recent graduates about their experience in the program could be the most helpful factor in choosing a school. Their firsthand experience can help you determine if the school will meet your expectations. If you don’t know anyone to talk with in person, most websites will have a section containing testimonials.
