5 Questions To Ask When Choosing A Dental Assisting Program

5 Questions To Ask When Choosing A Dental Assisting Program
May 30, 2018Revity RevityBlog

Dental assisting is a highly valuable and in-demand career. It allows you flexibility and competitive pay while providing the stability you may struggle to find in other professions.

Dental assisting allows you to work with people, tackle unique challenges, and do work that helps others. It’s no surprise that dental assisting schools are growing in size and popularity to keep up with the demand.

What do you need to know or consider before choosing a dental assisting program? How do you evaluate and compare schools? We have a few questions you can ask to begin learning important details for your future in dental assisting.

5 Questions to Ask When Choosing a Dental Assisting Program

  1. What does this program cover? Asking to see a syllabus or course content guide can help you compare different programs. Be sure to look for a program that adequately covers anatomy, practice, skills, procedures, and oral health, but doesn’t forget that a good program should also cover people skills.
  2. How long is the program? There is a great variety of dental assisting programs. Some are part-time for a longer duration, while others are full time and very immersive for a short amount of time. Find out how long their program lasts, then choose according to your needs and schedule.
  3. How much does it cost? Of course, this is a very important question for many students to ask. Along with cost, you may be interested in asking about financing options and what they can expect to make in a dental assisting job once they complete the program. It can be helpful to ask about scholarships as well.
  4. Is there job placement or hiring partnerships? You may want to ask a potential dental school how their students find jobs after graduation. Do they have a job fair or hiring dental offices that are partners? What are the hiring placement rates out of their program? This can be an indication of the success of the program and also help you find jobs faster upon completion.
  5. How much preparation is needed? Some programs require prerequisite courses or education, such as a high school diploma or an anatomy course. Some programs have a reading list and test to complete before entry. You may want to consider a job shadowing a dental assistant or checking out their textbook materials before your program for maximum success.
